About the American/Chinese Chestnut:

This American chestnut is located on a very old and exclusive   country club in Battle Creek, Michigan. This Old fellow has managed to resist the chestnut blight and appears to be at least 100 years old. Seedlings are grown from seed collected from this tree and are pollinated by some nearby Chinese chestnut.  Hopefully these seedlings will exhibit more chestnut blight resistance than even that of the parent. Before chestnut blight wiped out our American chestnuts, Whitetails relied heavily upon the abundant large sweet nuts as a dietary staple and enjoyed these sweet nuts even more than the white oak acorns. Hard to imagine that sweet White oak acorns were second fiddle at one time but grow a few of these Chestnut trees and you will discover that they are most definitely a Whitetail draw right up there with apples!!
